PAINTING TECHNIQUES

Undergraduate subject

Painting Techniques, a fine arts intensive subject, taught key lessons in the basics of painting in oil and acrylic paint.

This tonal observational painting taught the basics of observation, perspective and composition through sketching thumbnails of the live object which informed the placement of the chosen object in the painting. By using photography to capture compositions, I was able to frame and crop views. Key focus on shadows, contrast and enhancing the lines of the central fold created the focal point of the composition, enhancing the intricate element of the origami form.

The preparation of surfaces was taught, including how to prime plywood canvases and build canvas ones.

Through the use of oil paints, the mixing of colours within tonal ranges was established, creating warm, cool and neutral greys for the observational painting to be completed.
